Today's Fact
Fantastic Four #140 (1973) finally told the story Lee and Kirby had skipped in 1968 — and the monster’s whole empire turns out to be one long panic attack about dying.
THE GALAXY’S DEADLIEST TYRANT STARTED AS A STARVING BUG
The Featured Fact

Annihilus debuted in Fantastic Four Annual #6 (1968) as a fully formed monster with no past at all. Marvel let him menace the Negative Zone for five years before Fantastic Four #140 (November 1973) — titled, fittingly, “Annihilus Revealed!” — finally showed where he came from: he was not born a tyrant. He was a frail, nameless insect who found a dead starship.

The flashback, narrated by Annihilus himself, explains that the Tyannans had seeded barren Negative Zone worlds with life spores. One seed ship was struck by a meteor and crashed on the volcanic planet Arthros; its starving crew released their spores before dying. A thousand years later, the only intelligent creature to crawl out of that seeding found the wreck — and put on a helmet that poured all of Tyannan knowledge into his mind.

From the ship’s discarded life canisters he built the Cosmic Control Rod, the device that keeps him alive, and armor to make his weak body strong. But the knowledge came with a terror: having clawed his way out of nothing once, he decided the only safety was extermination — anything that could ever threaten him had to die first. The Annihilation Wave, the invasions, the Rod clutched like a lifeline: all of it is one small creature’s refusal to be helpless again.

A DEBUT WITH NO ORIGIN

Fantastic Four Annual #6 introduces him mid-rampage, already hunting the power that keeps his Rod charged. No flashback, no explanation — Lee and Kirby simply turned him loose.

FIVE YEARS OF SILENCE

Fantastic Four #140 was the first time any story asked where he came from — and the answer was buried in a single issue’s flashback, narrated by the villain himself.

A MILLENNIUM TO BECOME A MONSTER

Roughly a thousand years passed between the Tyannan crash and the creature’s discovery of the wreck. The Negative Zone’s scourge spent a millennium as the weakest thing on his world.
THE ROD

SALVAGE, NOT SORCERY

The Cosmic Control Rod — source of his power and effective immortality — was built from life-support canisters thrown away by a dead crew. His empire runs on salvage.
