AGATHA HARKNESS

Today's Fact

Salem was never her beginning. Salem was a change of address that arrived roughly twelve thousand years into the career.

AGATHA HARKNESS WAS ALREADY ANCIENT 500 YEARS BEFORE ATLANTIS SANK!
The Featured Fact

Marvel’s histories place Agatha Harkness on the board astonishingly early: she was old enough to remember a time 500 years before Atlantis sank beneath the sea — an event Marvel’s in-universe chronology dates to roughly 10,500 BC. Count forward from five centuries before that drowning to the present day and her lifespan runs past twelve thousand years, most of it lived before writing, cities or a single familiar civilisation existed to notice her.

That pre-Atlantean chapter is not empty scenery. In it, Agatha dealt directly with Scrier, a cosmic being who promised the young witch he would return whenever she needed him — and then appeared to be destroyed, leaving her to conclude for millennia that the promise had died with him. A goddess-tier rain cheque, issued before Atlantis fell, is the earliest dated appointment in her diary.

Set against that depth, the biography readers know is a thin top layer: the Salem coven of the 1600s, the founding of New Salem, the governess years at Whisper Hill with Franklin Richards and the mentorship of Wanda Maximoff together occupy barely three centuries — the last three percent of her life. The white-haired elder of the Fantastic Four stories is not a woman near the end of a long life. She is a survivor of a drowned world, wearing old age the way other people wear a coat.

Why It's Obscure

Everyone else in witchcraft measures a career in decades. Hers is measured in geological events.

c. 11,000 BC
Before the fall — Agatha is already a practicing witch half a millennium before Atlantis, Marvel’s first great civilisation, sinks under the ocean.
The Scrier promise
An appointment with a god — In that era the cosmic Scrier swears to return when she needs him; she spends thousands of years believing him destroyed.
1692
Salem, eventually — The witch trials that define her in most retellings arrive some twelve thousand years into her life — a late posting, not an origin.
The arithmetic
Three percent — Everything from Salem to the Scarlet Witch amounts to a small final slice of a lifespan that began before Atlantis fell.
