When a fight with the Sphinx hurled the young mutant Firestar backwards to Salem, Massachusetts in 1692, the townsfolk promptly tried to burn her at the stake as a witch. The rescue came telepathically, from the leader of the local coven herself: Agatha Harkness, already ancient, entirely unbothered, and hiding in plain sight in Nova Vol. 2 #6 (1994).
What Agatha told her guest over the following issue curdled the rescue into something far darker. She approved of the witch trials consuming her neighbours, arguing that persecution would cull the frail and leave Earth’s magical folk hardened for a coming war against ordinary humanity. She had personally submitted members of her own coven for trial to weed out the weak — and she wanted Firestar’s help choosing the next victims, with the girl’s ride home as leverage.
Angelica Jones refused and argued the hunted deserved a refuge instead of a ranking system. The plea landed. Agatha abandoned Salem’s bonfires, led her surviving witches away from mankind altogether, and founded the hidden Colorado colony of New Salem — meaning Marvel’s most notorious witch-hunt survives in canon partly because its most powerful target initially thought it was good management.
Why It's Obscure
The kindly governess of the Fantastic Four once graded her own coven by bonfire, and the failing students did not get a second term.
