Today's Fact
He landed on a borrowed planet with a jewel in his forehead, a surname somebody else had chosen, and no first name whatsoever. Four local teenagers fixed the missing piece.
The being who debuted in Fantastic Four #66–67 (1967) had no name at all beyond the pronoun Him — the Enclave’s artificial perfect man, hatched from a cocoon and gone within two issues. When the High Evolutionary recovered his drifting cocoon for Marvel Premiere #1 (1972), he supplied the first half of a replacement identity: he called the golden man Warlock, set the Soul Gem into his forehead, and sent him down to Counter-Earth to save its people from the Man-Beast.
Warlock arrived on that duplicate Earth with his errand scrambled by the descent, less a messiah with a mission than an amnesiac powerhouse wandering a strange new town. The people who found him, fed him and pointed him back toward his purpose were four ordinary teenagers: David Carter, Jason Grey, Eddie Roberts and Ellie Roberts — schoolkids playing host to a cosmic saviour.
Ellie did the naming. Deciding that Warlock sounded like a surname in want of a partner, she gave him the first name Adam — the first man, refitted for a manufactured man taking his first real steps among people. He accepted it on the spot, and the byline has never changed since: every Gauntlet, every Magus war and every Guardians adventure since 1972 has run under a name a Counter-Earth schoolgirl picked for him.
Why It's Obscure
A saviour assembled by committee: scientists built him, a godlike evolutionist surnamed him, and a teenager finished the job.
