Today's Fact

Omnipotence lasted only until Warlock performed surgery on his own soul to qualify for holding it.

ADAM WARLOCK TRIED TO BECOME A PERFECTLY LOGICAL GOD — AND HIS PURGED GOOD AND EVIL CAME BACK AS TWO SEPARATE VILLAINS!
The Featured Fact

When Adam Warlock took the Infinity Gauntlet from the defeated Thanos at the close of The Infinity Gauntlet #6 (1991), he decided a god could not afford a conscience or a temper. To wield near-omnipotence wisely, Warlock expelled the good and evil aspects of his own being, leaving himself a creature of pure, cold logic.

Exiled aspects of a cosmic soul do not evaporate. His expelled evil re-formed as the Magus — not the future self Warlock had once erased from the timeline, but a fresh incarnation wearing his face. In Infinity War #1 (1992) the Magus resurfaced with five cosmic containment units, an army of evil doppelgangers of Earth's heroes, and a plan to merge realities under his rule.

His expelled goodness took longer to introduce herself, and she was no safer. The Goddess stole the containment units and launched the Infinity Crusade (1993), gathering devout heroes to purge the universe of evil by force. The crowning irony arrived from the Living Tribunal, who barred the Infinity Gems from ever working in unison again — a ruling that made Warlock's self-mutilation unnecessary from the start.

Why It's Obscure

He fired his own conscience and his own cruelty on the same day, and both of them unionised.

1991
A god edits himself — Holding the Gauntlet after Thanos falls, Warlock purges good and evil from his soul so neither can cloud a god's judgement.
1992
Evil, rehired — The discarded darkness returns as the Magus of Infinity War, armed with cosmic containment units and mirror-image villains.
1993
Goodness, extremist — The discarded light returns as the Goddess of Infinity Crusade, whose holy war to abolish evil threatens everyone standing in its way.
The Tribunal
All for nothing — The Living Tribunal simply outlaws the Gems working together, voiding the very danger Warlock mutilated his soul to prevent.
