Today's Fact
A dead hero, a stolen gem, and the Mad Titan's very first death — all in one 1977 annual.
In Avengers Annual #7 (1977), Jim Starlin set Thanos to gathering the Soul Gems into a giant synthetic gem meant to snuff out Earth's sun as a love offering to Death. Warlock fought that campaign beside Captain Marvel and the Avengers — and lost his life in it, his soul drawn into the Soul Gem on his own brow.
Inside the gem waited Soul World, a pocket paradise where Warlock was reunited with the fallen Gamora and Pip the Troll. Rest was on offer and he refused it: in Marvel Two-in-One Annual #2 (1977), Spider-Man and the Thing raid Thanos's stronghold, and Spider-Man's spider-sense leads him to knock the Soul Gem free of the Titan's doomsday device.
What came out of the gem was Warlock's soul itself, burning with the gem's full power. It struck Thanos once — and the Mad Titan turned to solid granite where he stood, his first true death in Marvel continuity. Warlock's spirit then slipped back into Soul World, leaving the heroes to bury his body on an asteroid under a stone of their own.
Why It's Obscure
Thanos has died often enough to need a loyalty card — this page covers the first time, delivered by a man already dead himself.
